One of characteristics of MANETs is that it can be constructed without infrastructure, such as routers or access points, and mobile nodes has to use the same routing protocol to deliver messages for communication. There are several commonly routing protocols have been proposed previously, such as Ad-hoc Distance Vector (AODV) or Dynamic Source Routing (DSR). Unfortunately, they cannot support high-speed mobile nodes in MANETs because the route will be frequently broken when a mobile node moves out the radio range. Therefore, the packet lost rate will be increased rigorously under thin nodes high-speed movement. To conquer such problem, we propose a routing protocol for high-speed and thin mobile nodes in MANETs namely HSAODV (High-speed AODV). AODV only maintains one route between the source node and the destination node. Compared with AODV, the proposed HSAODV will try to maintain muti-path during the route discovery phase. Hence, every node, including source node, destination node and all intermediate nodes, will store the routing information associated with its all one-hop neighbors. If a transmission link between two connected nodes is failure, the link can be replaced immediately through alternative link. If there is no alternative link, an error message will be sent to its precursor nodes in the route to start a selection for alternative route, and so on. That is, the proposed HSAODV will maintain more routes from the source to the destination, in order to avoid enabling route discovery procedure once the primary route is broken.
