Establishing the Evaluative System of Developing Eco-village in Rural Communities in Taiwan

博士 === 國立中興大學 === 園藝學系所 === 100 === Ecovillage, which is seen as an environmental friendly lifestyle for the communities, has been discussed in the past literature. Due to the lack of concrete definition of Ecovillage, it is necessary that the related works devoted to find a scientific and systematic approach to understand the concept of Ecovillage. In addition, the development of Ecovillage is still new in Taiwan, thus it is important to develop an evaluative system for the identification of Ecovillage. The main purpose of this study was to build a measurement model to study the composition of Ecovillage. There are four stages in this study. In the first stage, in-depth interview and literature review were used to collect the conceptual items of Ecovillage. The results of interviews also indicated the development status of ecovillage in Taiwan. In the second stage, focus groups interviews and expert questionnaires were conducted to design the questionnaire. In the third stage, the questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the data from experts, governmental stuff, scholars, and residents. In last stage, factor analyses were adopted to confirm the dimensions and factors of Ecovillage. The results showed that the concept of ecovillage in Taiwan consisted of seven factors, such as Sense of Security, Leading of development direction, Transmission of Techniques and Knowlages, Communication of activities, Living of Healthy, Experience of Spirit living, Development of local characteristics). The study also revealed that respondents put more importance on environmental conservation and economic issues than other aspects of Ecovillage. Accordingly, this study proposed a comprehensive definition of Ecovillage: an Ecovillage is an village as a secure and empowerment settlement, in which techniques transmission and lifestyle experience are appeared frequently, and human activities are benefit for both human and natural world, in a way that is supportive of healthy human development, cultural interaction and can display the characteristics of local area.
