It enables a collection of mobile nodes to communicate with each other without any infrastructured network equipment. Nodes of MANET are energy limited and hard to recharge outside, so how to use the energy effectively becoming a hot research issue recently. Furthermore, packets are transmitted by air in wireless network, in contrast to wired network that packets are transmitted by cable. Thus, wireless network is unstable and packets are prone to lose due to the wireless environments. Consequently, in addition to energy issue, we must consider the transmission performance. Previously, researches have proposed an energy-aware ad-hoc routing protocol called UPDOC. But UPDOC has some defects. In this paper, we improve UPDOC by adding the traffic management and route repair mechanism. Furthermore, there are a lot of routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks which have been proposed in recent years. They can be classified into three categories, proactive, preactive, and hybrid. Most of papers compare the performance of different protocols, but seldom of them compare the performance of different protocols that nodes are with random initial energy. In this paper, we select DSDV as a representative proactive protocol, DSR and AODV as preactive one, and ZRP and UPDOC as hybrid solutions.
