The cutting tool manufacturers are mostly focusing on cost down and quality improvement for better performance and life used with the tools. But, the best way to strengthen a cutter maker’s competition is to provide the conditions of cutters best meet the customers’ demands. To reach this goal, it is necessary to find the essential elements and parameters with the cutting tools, such as the material of both blades and cutters, and the speed and depth of cutting. Four possible factors affecting the quality of cutting tool, including blade material, cutter material, cutting speed and cutting depth, are derived by applying the schemes of secondary literatures, expert interviews and TRIZ. The Gray System Theory and TOPSIS method are jointly used to investigate the multi-quality characteristics problems when conducting the Taguchi analysis. After analyzing the interactions among all the factors with TOPSIS method and judging with ANOVA for the best factor of quality characters and level, the optimal sets of parameters of manufacture will be concluded.
