Summary:博士 === 國立成功大學 === 中國文學系碩博士班 === 100 === Phan Boi Chau(1867-1940) was a pioneer of modern Vietnamese national movement, who has great achievements of world situations among Vietnamese intellectual. Living in an era of revolution, he was heavily involved in political revolutionary activities and interacted with East Asian intellectuals. In addition, he had great understanding in literature, history, philosophy and Confucianism that made him and his writings complicated but spreadable. Hence, he is one of the representatives of East Asian or Vietnamese intellectual with great discuss ability. Phan has written a great number of political articles and Chinese novels to intensify the revolution in Vietnam. However, researches encounter difficulty to understand his work due to several reasons: Vietnam Chinese novels were not revealed, unfairness and favoritism of researchers, disturbance from Ideology and etc. By reviewing these documents, we realized questions to be solved. This article is written to study Phan and his Chinese novels, which mainly focus on his recently discovered Chinese novels and his political articles. The purpose of this article is to discuss Phan’s role in East Asian revolution, political development and interaction among East Asian regions. There are 7 chapters. Chapter 1 explained the overall flow of this article, started from literature review to question addressed, methods, procedures and outlines. Second chapter provided a detail introduction of Phan’s biography and his interaction with Liang QiChao, a Chinese scholar in late Qing Dynasty to better understand the relationship of East Asian scholars and the peers. The third chapter discussed about ownership of Phan’s literately works, and reviewed how his work was published and distributed. Chapter 4 included Phan’s writings and his Chinese novels about Vietnam political issue and Activism of Vietnam, such as bureaucracy of French, Vietnam (or Vietnamese) weaknesses, Vietnamese heroes, structure and future of Vietnam, and so forth. In chapter 5, we analyzed Phan’s interchangeable philosophy in his political articles and novels, including choices among armed force and peacekeepers; suspicion and aspiration of civilization and revolution; complication among ethnicity and their philosophy; as well as issue among anarchism and communism. Chapter 6 focused on characters created by Phan in his writings such as heroes, adventurists, and animals. These characters reflected his worries, hopes and aspiration of the country. The last chapter concluded Phan’s role and the significance of studying his writings in literature research, analysis, society and culture understanding. In summary, newly discovered Phan’s novels have served as valuable materials to study Vietnam Chinese novels. His political articles, on the other hand, have allowed us to capture the spiritual adventure of the writer, which is helpful in studying East Asian literature, culture and the society.
