Taiwan is the only place where the integrity of Chinese characters is well-preserved. However, in Taiwan, the course of Chinese calligraphy is marginalized in school education. Thus, students’ impressions on this subject are indirectly affected. Overviewing the researches on art education in Taiwan, few are related to Chinese calligraphy. Researches on Chinese calligraphy teaching with junior high school students as their subjects are especially deficient. Therefore, this research integrates Chinese calligraphy into visual arts teaching in junior high school. With multiple teaching strategies, it aims to develop students’ creative thinking, enhance their leaning interests, and guide them to find pleasure in constructing art works. As an observer as well as a lesson plan designer, this research manages to fuse the artistic characteristics of Chinese calligraphy with the theory of creative thinking to know if it has any influence on students’ learning, and then propose some suggestions to future related researches. The subjects of this action research are students of Class 15 Grade 8 in Changhua County Xizhi Junior High School (a pseudonym). The goal of this research is to know what the meaning of using creative thinking teaching on Chinese calligraphy is, and how to design the lesson plan and content of creative thinking teaching on Chinese calligraphy. This research points out the problems we might meet in applying creative thinking in junior high school Chinese calligraphy teaching, and also proposes some solutions. In addition, the discussion of how the creative thinking teaching on Chinese calligraphy influences students is included as well. Data collection consists of classroom observation, after-class interview, and document collection etc. By analyzing the data along with teacher’s reflections and feedbacks from the classroom observers, this research proposes some suggestions for future course content and teaching methods. This research shows that teachers can increase students’ learning interests and attention by making good use of instructional media. Besides, proper learning guidance can help students learn better. In this way, students are willing to break through the traditional way of thinking and try to think creatively.
