He was also a famous violinist and conductor. Spohr’s musical style was influenced by, in addition to Mozart, a violinist Pierre Rode (1774-1830). After hearing his performance in Paris in 1803, Spohr started to emulate Rode and developed his own musical style. In 1808, Hermstedt (1778-1846), an eminent clarinetist at the time, commissioned Spohr to compose a clarinet concerto. Through Hermstedt, Spohr understood the characteristics and flexibilities of the clarinet. Therefore he composed a total of four clarinet concertos to explore the instrument’s technique and range as well as for Hermstedt to demonstrate his artistry. This thesis presents a study on Spohr’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1, Op.26, and is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which includes the motivation, purpose, literature review, limitation, and methods of this research. The second chapter deals with a biography of Spohr and the background information of his first concerto. The third chapter includes an analysis and interpretation of this work through discussions on forms, scales, modes, dynamics and tempos. The fourth chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes all the findings in the previous chapters and offers the writer’s personal interpretation of the work.
