The 200 nm silica particles were prepared by sol-gel method of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) through the hydrolysis and condensation reaction. Silica was first modified using silane treated polystyrene-sulfonic acid-g-maleic acid (PSSA_MA) with two different coupling agents including 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS). Modified silica solution was added to chitosan aqueous solution, and the mixture solution was fabricated to hybrid membranes. The modified silica was examined with FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectra), TGA (Thermogravimetic analyzer), EDS (Energy dispersive spectrometer), SEM (Scanning electron microscopy), TEM (Transmission electron microscopy), UV/VIS (Ultraviolet/Visible), Zeta sizer. The comparison of grafting effectiveness for two different coupling agents was made. Analysis of modified silica to probe the reaction sites using poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(styrene-g-sulfonic acid)(PSSA) was conducted as well. The specific peaks for grafted polymers were observed for modified silica in FT-IR spectra and EDS. The amount of grafted silica and the thermal stability of the composites were determined by TGA. The grafting yield of silane onto PSSA_MA increased with the addition of catalyst (EDC) in APTES system. Thermal property of chitosan was improved with the addition of silica.
