This has resulted in chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, being listed among the top 10 leading causes of death in Taiwan. Because Taiwan is gradually transforming into an aging society, issues regarding long-term elder care have become a focus for the government and social service groups. The remote take care system examined in this study involved client use of the CLEVER CHEK blood glucose and blood pressure measurement system and an HTC Hero smart phone. An application was developed for the Android smart phone operating system platform to receive the electrocardiogram (ECG) physiological parameters measured by the Bluetooth blood glucose and blood pressure measurement system and instruments. These data were uploaded and transmitted to a back-end server using Wi-Fi or 3G networks. If the physiological parameters exhibited by the patient were abnormal, a short message service (SMS) notifying paramedics or medical personnel would be sent at the same time information was uploaded to the back-end server. The back-end server comprised a Web page server and a database server. Patients’ uploaded physiological parameters were stored in the database server, which allowed patients and paramedics or medical personnel to monitor the variations and conditions of their physiological parameters using a Web browser. In this study,we developed a remote take care system. In addition to effectively recording patients’physiological parameters, this system notifies paramedics and medical personnel of emergency conditions for relevant treatment. Through this system, we hope to reduce the probability of people in Taiwan developing chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and to notify paramedics and medical personnel using smart phone SMSs when patients exhibit abnormal physiological parameters, enabling paramedics and relevant personnel to understand patients’ physiological situations at all times.
