Analysis of Meteorological Factors for Typhoon-related Storm Surge

碩士 === 國立高雄海洋科技大學 === 海事資訊科技研究所 === 100 === The main purpose of this study is to examine the atmospheric factors induced by type-2 typhoon (moving northwestward through northern Taiwan) on tide variation over Taiwan. Four type-2 typhoons (Haitang 2005, Bilis 2006, Kalmaegi 2008, Morakot 2009) are se...

Four type-2 typhoons (Haitang 2005, Bilis 2006, Kalmaegi 2008, Morakot 2009) are selected for analysis. Tidal elevation, surface wind, and surface pressure fields from 5 tidal stations and 5 nearby weather stations of the Central Weather Bureau are subject to regression analysis. Major findings of this study are as follows: Typhoon-induced pressure variability plays a more important role than surface wind in affecting tide variability. Total tide rise and tide/pressure slope have larger magnitude in eastern Taiwan than western Taiwan. The inclusion of wind fields tends to enhance tide/pressure slope only in Hsinchu station. Overall, effect of winds on tide rise is larger in eastern Taiwan than western Taiwan. This effect is evident when there are southerly winds over eastern Taiwan, but westerly winds over western Taiwan. Slope of tide rise is about 0.64-1.96 cm/mb in eastern Taiwan, and 0.26-1.18 cm/mb in western Taiwan. Given a normal pressure drop about 40 mb during the coming of a typhoon, the typhoon-related tide rise is estimated to be 26-78 cm in eastern Taiwan and 10-47 cm in western Taiwan.
