During his life, he lived abroad most of the time and was unable to return to his hometown; therefore, his music often revealed Czech melodies and styles which expressed his homesickness. His music was strongly influenced by the multicultural surroundings, and hence his works exhibited a variety of styles and compositional methods. The First Sonata for Flute and Piano was completed in America in 1945, which consists of three movements. This composition was dedicated to Georges Laurent, a former principal flute player of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and is the only sonata for the flute among his works. In this study, Chapter one is a brief introduction of the motives, goals, methods, and scope of this research. Chapter two is a brief introduction of the composer and background overview of this sonata. Chapter three is an analysis of the work, dwelling on aspects such as formal structure, tonality, rhythm, and musical texture. Chapter four is personal interpretation and performance suggestions for the work. Chapter five is the conclusion which summarizes all the findings in the previous chapters. 馬曉珮 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 0 zh-TW
