P. betle not only has high annual production value, but also creates a lot of job opportunities and contributes greatly to the prosperity of the rural economy in Taitung. Taitung is located in the subtropical regions and the climate is always hot and wet The unsafe climate can easily lead to serious pests and diseases on P. betle that can induce a high mortality rate of P. betle plants and have production declined sharply. The price fluctuates and induces a supply and demand imbalance immediately. To keep the balance between production and marketing, maintain reasonable price of P. betle, robust seedlings are needed to maintain and get the regular and stable production of crops and, finally, reach the goal of quality enhancement. This study, by a serious of experiments, investigated the effect of growth regulators and characteristics of P. betle cuttings on survival rate and the growth of cuttings. The influence of different cuttings environment between a net house and a greenhouse were also compared. The result showed that survival rate of P. betle cuttings was 98.8% in greenhouse; however, the survival rate was only 70.2% in net house. The growth of P. betel cuttings in greenhouse was better than those in net house and had higher uniformity. In net house, the result of experiments on cuttings showed IBA, as a growth regulator, had the best efficiency and cuttings with thin stem and high node density had highest survival rate. The fourth repeat that was located on the highly area had the best survival rate in all blocks. Both IAA and IBA could enhance the plant height of cuttings in net house. The cuttings with thick stem and high node density had better growth rate. The fourth repeat had the highest growth rate in all block sets. Totally, the results showed that greenhouse was a better place for the P. betle cutting propagation. This study shows different ways help to the P. betle farmers to develop a healthy seedlings, use the correct cutting propagation technology, reduce the damage caused by weather hazards, enhance the survival rate of cuttings, maintain good seedlings quality, and grow high uniformity seedlings. To cultivate seedlings and grow crops smoothly, economic and efficient facilities and environment must be provided. Building a high efficient production system can avoid the lack of seedlings supply caused by natural diseases, and reduce the investment. These methods can be widely applied in annual production of seedling to stabilize market supply and demand. Improving the production and the quality of P. betle can promote the farmers' income and integrate rural development and sustainable development can be reached.
