It was completed in 1881, as a Grieg middle period work. It combined Romantic composition techniques and simple folk melodies, depicting the scenery of the Norwegian countryside and farmers singing and dancing with joy, filled with the characteristics Norwegian style. Through this research, it is found that "Norwegian Dances, Op.35" is the mid-Grieg work for piano duet. During the period, Grieg was deeply fascinated by the art style like dance and music of Norwegian folk life, and determined to promote Norwegian folk music. Therefore, using Norwegian music material in music was his main compose direction. Grieg uses five elements such as chromatic, sustained notes, ostinato, augmented sixth chords and Lydian modes, to generate distinctive effects of harmony that emphasize Norwegian music style. Grieg uses simple and clear ternary form as the main structure, and specializing in continuously repeating the same melody, but expresses varied styles by changing the range, harmony, or tempo with each repeat. In Grieg''s well-designed layout, the Norwegian folk music was naturally weaved in his music, it then became the Grieg''s personal writing style, and also made the "Norwegian Dance, Op.35 " more creative with distinctive features and rich ethnic flavor.
