碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 台灣文化研究所碩士班 === 100 === Based on different periods, this thesis is to explore the process of the development of Presbyterian Church in the southern Taiwan with the regional development as the background to dissect the establishment and development of Presbyterian Church in Xinhua district. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction which describes research motive, purpose, literature reviews, method and the application of this thesis, so as to provide a guiding reference in understanding the development of Presbyterian Church in Xinhua district. The first section of the second chapter maks a brief introduction of Dutch Calvinism and its first- time missionary in Xinhua district. In addition, the study analyses the views of development of Presbyterian Church at different periods since 1865, including the Dutch occupation, Ming Zheng, Qing dynasty, Japanese occupation and from postwar period to nowadays. By means of this, it studies the role of Presbyterian Church in Taiwan overall vicissitude and the local development in Xinhua district. The third chapter is to explore missionaries of Presbyterian Church. It analyzes the internal organization and structure. Furthermore, it is to understand how the division of labor and operating modes of the internal affairs work in churches. It also discusses the construction ministry and the architectural style’s evolution of chapels.. Besides, it not only introduces how Church promotes the external affairs, but also dissects the concrete results of its interaction with the communities and what kind of challenges and impact Church faces as well. Chapter fourth tries to figure out the growth of family chronicles, their roles and influence to the churches. The fifth chapter focuses on the issue of the churchs’ sustainable development. It tries to find out the development processes of Xinhua Presbyterian Church and the effects observed from the side. In addition, it analyzes the difficulties and bottlenecks in its academic development, and attempts to make specific recommendations and action programes. In the conclusion, in view of history of Presbyterian Church in Xinhua district, it would summarize the characteristic presented during its development process. In general, I expect this study of the development of Presbyterian Church in Xinhua district would be useful to the local historical data of Presbyterian Church.
