Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 書畫藝術學系造型藝術碩士班 === 100 === Kuo Tong-Jong, born in 1927 in Taiwan Chiayi, is an oil painter of our time. In 1950, he passed the exam and entered the art department of National Taiwan College of Education, (now National Taiwan Normal University Department of Fine Arts), where he received the academic training for art including, traditional Chinese painting, western painting, and sketch. After graduating from college, Kuo carried on his oil painting creation. His works then were greatly influenced by Chinese painting and calligraphy and after incorporating the different traits of Chinese and western painting, Kuo developed a unique abstract style of painting and his creation presented as an amalgam of Chinese calligraphy and western oil painting. The present study applies the method of deduction and documentary analysis to investigate the books and album regarding the painter and conducts a field research of interviewing with the painter to understand the process of creating a painting. By using the theoretical framework, formal analysis and technique analysis, draw from art history study, Kuo’s works of abstract painting can be classified into four categories: 1. “Abstract painting with irregular lines and curves of Chinese calligraphy”, 2. “Abstract painting inspired by and outlined with the concept of Chinese character”, 3. “Abstract painting using Chinese character as form element” ,4. “Abstract painting intertwined with the linear essence of Chinese calligraphy and color block”. Actually, Chinese calligraphy is one of the aspects of Chinese visual art as well as one element of ink painting. Basically, there is no relationship between Chinese calligraphy & western painting, although some western & eastern artists presented the amalgam of Chinese calligraphy & western painting in their works, but also very few Taiwan oil painters presented their works by the method of Chinese calligraphy. The present study of Kuo Tong-Jong’s works of abstract painting indicates all spectrum of Kuo’s abstract painting works are underpinned by Chinese calligraphy. Meanwhile, by comparing eastern & western art works featured by the mixture of Chinese calligraphy & western oil painting, we can realize the characteristic of Kuo Tong-Jong’s abstract painting.
