There are a few observations on future development trend that population will continuously congregate toward cities, residential density will climb up, more high-rise buildings will be constructed and the quality of urban living environment will gradually deteriorate. Surrounding towns with natural environment will attract more urbanites to go there for holiday. This kind of holiday emigration mode will gradually be integrated with original country residence mode. Consequently, country housings that provide accommodation for short-term vacationers have arisen from this phenomenon. This type of building is called “holiday housing” in the study. From the perspective of housing development designer, the study will investigate the development, planning and design strategies of the new residential form “holiday housing.” As the process of building development is complicated and requires consideration of a wide variety of factors, such as development cost, market survey, planning design, sales model, the study can’t go through all of them one by one. Therefore, one new residential development project in Wuji Township, Yilan County was chosen as an example to investigate the feasibility of development and review design results via practical operation process. The outlines of the study are as below: 1.To analyze the gaps between market competitors, draw up development sales, and planning design strategies. 2.To investigate local townhouse market, develop new consumer demand group. 3.To develop residential living space design guiding principles for traditional townhouse in non-urban area. The scope of the study is limited to “townhouse,” the most familiar housing type for the general public while superior villa type of housing including detached house or duplex are excluded from the scope for two reasons. Firstly, the consumer market has the stronger demand for townhouse. Secondly, it is hoped that this study will help middle-class residents enjoy and possess better living quality and facilitate professional development designers’ execution of “value engineering” for this type of building.
