In response to the service demands for the elderly, many strategies and system designs have been proposed. The ultimate goal of these studies is to take advantage of the newly developed IT technologies (e.g., Smart Home, Ambient Intelligence, etc.) to help the elderly being active in society and independent for a longer time. The technology development of the aged care systems is very fast, therefore a flexible and scalable system framework will provide a solid base. One framework meets the needs is the using ontology as the core component. Ontology is a higher level knowledge description. A framework using ontology is benefited from providing common support to the variance of lower level devices and services. Our research investigates how to design an ontology-based aged care system. In this paper, we focus on the ontology design of aged care systems based on available sensor devices and instruments for the Taiwan ageing. We also discuss how the ontology based systems work.
