Two questionnaires were developed in order to understand the current status of information retrieval area in library of Taipei elementary schools to check whether library user education includes teaching students how to solve their information needs, and to understand students’ information needs and information seeking behavior. Questionnaires investigating the current status of the information retrieval area were sent to people in charge of the libraries at 141 public elementary schools in Taipei City and a total of 114 valid questionnaires were returned. Questionnaires investigating5th and 6th graders’ information needs and information seeking behavior were sent randomly to students in elementary schools in Taipei City and a total of 517 valid questionnaires were returned. Conclusions: A. The current installation of library information retrieval area in elementary schools in Taipei City is not good enough. a. A percentage of 80.7% of elementary school libraries in Taipei have set information retrieval area for students to use, but only an average of 2.7 computers are available in the area. b. The reasons for the other 19.3% libraries without information retrieval area are due to environmental limits and the low frequency of use by students (students normally inquire the desk person when needed). c. Only 82.6% of the Taipei City elementary school library information retrieval area can connect to the Internet for information search. d. Only 48.3% of the information retrieval area computers are ready to use at all times. e. The frequency of 5th and 6th graders’ to use information retrieval area is only 29.2%. f. About 70% of 5th and 6th graders use the information retrieval area to search on the internet as the primary purpose; 50% of the 5th and 6th graders use the information retrieval area to search the library catalogue as the secondary purpose. B. There has been some basic development of the library user education in terms of teaching students to solve their information needs in elementary schools in Taipei City. a. A percentage of 52.8% of the libraries have planned teaching goals for training information retrieval. b. A percentage of 49.4% of the libraries have planned courses including information retrieval methods. c. About 32.4% of the libraries have already developed teaching materials for information retrieval methods. d. A percentage of 57.9% of the libraries have administered library user education courses including information retrieval techniques. e. About 44.1% of the libraries have taught students about the information retrieval area. C.
