Methods: A total of 1098 climacteric women were drawn from two hospitals and each subject was asked to fill out a World Health Organization quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and ROMEⅡwere employed to evaluate the sleep quality and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) of the climacteric women. Multiple linear regression analysis and structural equation modeling were employed to determine the impact of climacteric transition on QOL. A double-blind, randomized trial was then conducted to evaluate the efficacy of SZRT and JWSYS in climacteric women with insomnia. A total of 60 subjects 40–60 years of age with a history of insomnia at least 1 month were recruited and were instructed to take 4 g 3 times per day of either SZRT or JWSYS for a period of 4 weeks. The outcome measures were the mean component scores of the PSQI and the individual items score of the WHOQOL-BREF. Results: Subjective sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, and FGID were found to be major determinants of the scores in different QOL domains. Mixed model analysis showed that SZRT was relatively effective in improving habitual sleep efficiency and sleep duration, while JWSYS was effective in improving sense of well-being. Conclusion: subjective sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, and FGID should be taken into consideration in the management of climacteric women seeking medical advice. And, SZRT appears to be more effective than JWSYS for improving sleep efficiency and duration, but the latter is likely more effective in improving well-being.
