We put WSN divided into two-tier of the virtual clusters. In the low-flow state of the outer tire use the common active period protocol. In the High-flow state of the inner tire use the scheduled protocol. In this paper, we proposed a novel protocol using at the outer tier, called Enhanced Sensor MAC protocol (ES-MAC). ES-MAC is divided into three stages, Network Deployment Phase, Path Setting Phase and Packet Transmission Phase. In Network Deployment Phase, we establish the virtual clusters in every tire and set up the transmission path. In Path Setting Phase, sensor node will send the wakeup packet to determine the transmission sequence. Finally, sensor node will follow the sequence to transmission data in the Packet Transmission Phase. ES-MAC not only reduced the overhearing of sensor nodes but also increased the sleep time of sensor nodes. Simulation results show that ES-MAC has lower average packet delay time than S-MAC under different traffic. In Multi-hop WSN, S-MAC must compete with the channel before every transmission and packet maybe must across the sleep period, that lead to S-MAC has a longer delay time than ES-MAC.
