Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 應用外語系碩士班 === 100 === This study aims to develop an ESP course of art and design with picture books and to explore how picture books could be implemented to meet design majors’ learning needs. Base on the framework of ESP course development, a needs analysis and a syllabus that included seven picture books was designed. Fifty-two design majored students at Yunlin university participated in this course for 18 weeks. Data collected from classroom observations, web log, the focus group interviews, pre-course and post-course questionnaires were analyzed to evaluate the learning outcome of teaching with picture books. The result showed that the materials benefited to the students mainly in two aspects: improving language skills and enhancing learning motivation. The findings also confirm that it is applicable to use picture books in ESP course of design when two critical points were included in terms of teaching materials and teaching process. First, the stories have to be comprehensible stories and the illustrations should be aesthetically sophisticated. Second, the extending activities that were designed based on students’ learning needs were necessary. With the two critical points considered, design majored students will feel more beneficial to learn ESP with picture books.
