The subjects of this research are students who took vocational education courses (referred to below as vocational students) in a school in central Taiwan (school A) who have graduated within the past five years. There were a total of 332 subjects, excluding those who couldn’t be contacted. Related secondary data provided by school offices, phone interviews, and online admission lists were analyzed using Chi-square tests and descriptive statistics in order to understand the career choices and current status of vocational students who graduated from school A, along with qualitative interview data to better interpret quantitative data. Following are the research results: 1. The occupational fields involved in junior high school vocational education courses are based on the subjects and fields of study that cooperating vocational high schools provide, not on student needs. 2. Vocational courses and occupational field exploration in junior high schools do not fully match the different career exploration needs of male and female vocational students. 3. Vocational students have a moderate to low academic performance. 4. After graduating from junior high school, 53% percent attend high schools with applied vocational education systems, ranking at the top, followed by 36% of vocational students who attend high schools with a general vocational system. 5. The majority of vocational students who qualify as possessing special skills attended general vocational high schools, adding up to 77% while 61% of students without this qualification attended applied vocational high schools. 6. The top six occupational field choices for students who applied to vocational high schools within the past five years are electrics and electronics (22.9%), mechanics (16.6%), business and management (13.9%), civil engineering and architecture (12.7), home economics (9.6%), and food and beverage services (9.0%) 7. There’s a 50% correlation between occupational field groups in junior high school and occupational fields that student choose for vocational high school. 8. Most Vocational students choose to continue their education after graduating from vocational high school. 9. Vocational students’ choice of whether or not to continue their education after vocational high school graduation is not related to gender. 10. Vocational students graduating from vocational high schools with different education systems show a disparity in choosing whether or not to continue their education. Most vocational students graduating from general vocational high schools choose to continue their education, while those attending applied vocational education courses and cooperative education show no significant difference between choosing whether or not to continue their education. Vocational students attending comprehensive high schools or junior colleges all choose to continue their education. According to the research results listed above, the researcher provides suggestions for the government in reference to the reformation of vocational education courses in junior high schools.
