According to the 2011 annual statistics of Ministry of Economic Affair, there were 124.7 billions SMEs in 2010. That is, around ninety-eight percent of businesses were SMEs in Taiwan. SMEs have rather limited resources, and also frequently face new challenges in the current market. Business Intelligent systems (BIS) provide an opportunity for SMEs to improve their efficiency and effectiveness, and even gain the competitive advantage. However, it still lacks of an understanding of critical factors influencing BIS adoption in SMEs. In this study, we adapted from Thong (1999) to develop an integrated model to examine the critical factors influencing BIS adoption in SMEs. Variables from four constructs including organizational characteristics, decision-maker characteristics, environmental characteristics, and BIS characteristics, are selected. A survey of Taiwanese SMEs was conducted. Five hundred questionnaires were distributed and one hundred and three usable responses were collected. The response rate approximates 20.6%. The analytical results indicated that firm size, employees' IT skills, CEO attitude towards IT adoption, environmental uncertainty, relative advantage, system integration, and instantaneity are important determinants of BIS adoption in SMEs.
