Pulse diagnosis has, since ancient times, been a crucial and important method in traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis and the treatment of disease. The widely used pulse diagnosis of modern times is the one recorded in The Pulse Canon - “Pulse Diagnosis of Bowels and Viscera Separately through Six Positions of Wrist Pulse" (「寸口六部分候臟腑脈法」). However, this method of pulse diagnosis was applied almost 2,000 years ago, way before the claims in The Pulse Canon. Physicians from different dynasties have had different interpretations, experience and conflicts regarding the positions of the wrist pulse when diagnosing ailments of the bowels and viscera. These different perspectives have also confused new learners as it has been difficult for them to follow and learn. Furthermore, there have been no significant breakthroughs in the usage of this pulse diagnosis until now and this has meant limitations and imperfections in clinical practice. Based on the pulse diagnosis of modern times, this study first analyzes the sources and transformation of pulse diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine, and explores the currently used “Pulse Diagnosis of Bowels and Viscera Separately through Six Positions of Wrist Pulse" in order to analyze the sources of the positions of viscera. The study also , looks at the differences in the theories and summarizes the understanding and conflicts of physicians from different dynasties regarding the positions of the bowels and viscera, such as the life gate, triple burner and large and small intestine etc. Following on, the focus of this study is detailed. Although physicians of different dynasties widely held that there were some omissions and some photos lost in the current volume of The Pulse Canon:Shou-Jian Illustrated (《脈經:手檢圖》), the value and importance of The Pulse Canon are still highly emphasized. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further exploration. First of all, this study examines the difference between the currently popular version of The Pulse Canon 《脈經》and the original copy of Shou-Jian Illustrated (「手檢圖」), and further discusses the conflicts between these two versions. Moreover, the author organizes the opinions of physicians from later periods, such as Shi-Zhen Li''s (李時珍) analysis, discussion and interpretation of the pulse manifestation as mentioned in Shou-Jian Illustrated . Finally, this study aims to refigure Shou-Jian Illustrated . After having refigured the pulse diagnosis method in Shou-Jian Illustrated , for clinic physicians, one of the focuses is how to put the illustrated pulse diagnosis method into practice. Chapter five of this study proposes the scenarios where the pulse diagnosis featured in Shou-Jian Illustrated can be applied and then analyzes how the physicians of today can combine this method with "Pulse Diagnosis of Bowels and Viscera Separately through Six Positions of Wrist Pulse", separating the wheat from the chaff. Therefore, this study is expected to perfect the pulse theories of traditional Chinese medicine, enhance the techniques of pulse diagnosis and enable clinical practices to become more accurate and effective. 周淑媚 2013 學位論文 ; thesis 156 zh-TW
