Description
Summary:碩士 === 朝陽科技大學 === 應用外語研究所 === 101 === Demotivation has long been a topic of particular interest to teachers who have witness their students become demotivated. It is regarded as the negative counterparts of motives and is an important factor that influences learners’ English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. However, previous studies mainly discussed learner’s motivation issues, not demotivating factors. The purpose of this study is to determine possible demotivating factors among EFL learners in high school. 400 Taiwanese EFL learners in high school completed an EFL learning demotivating questionnaire which included two categories of demotivating factors in EFL/ESL from D&;ouml;rnyei (1998) and Tran and Baladut (2007): internal and external factors. The finding reveals that learners are demotivated toward English learning and are more internally than externally demotivated to learn English. For the internal factor, the reduced self-confidence demotivates the respondents most. Focus on be unable to achieve their parents’ expectations also demotivates learners’ EFL learning. For the external factors, some respondents report that they feel that a word with many different meanings which confuse theirs reading. Pedagogical implications are also discussed based on the findings.
