description 碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 大眾傳播學研究所 === 101 === The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between television viewing behavior and idol worship among the Aboriginal adolescents. This research used a survey methodology. The instrument was adapted from two questionnaires of Zhi-Liang Wu’s (2001) “Television Viewing Behavior Survey” and Yan-Zhu Chen’s (2004) “Idol Worship Survey” as to Television viewing behavior and the object of idol worship. Twelve classes of 284 Aboriginal senior high school students participated in the study. Approximately 98 percent of students live in the indigenous tribes. Data for the findings came from the questionnaire administrated among all Aboriginal senior high school students (n = 284, with a 100% response rate). With SPSS analytics software, the quantitative analysis of the data collected from the questionnaire was conducted through descriptive statistics, chi-square, and one-way ANOVA to indicate the direction and relationship between the two sets of variables. Two main results of this study showed: 1. The Differences of Television Viewing Behavior among Aboriginal Adolescents 1.1. There was no significant difference among the genders for their television viewing behavior in the week and on the weekend. 1.2. Father’s educational level significantly affected the time that Aboriginal adolescents spent watching television programs during the week. 1.3. There was no significantly difference among Aboriginal adolescent with differing family structures in spending time viewing television programs during the week or on weekend. 1.4. In terms of the level of their preference for various types of programs, there was significantly difference between male and female Aboriginal adolescents, particularly the statistic results of drama programs (F = 21.707, p < .001), fighting programs (F = 57.694, p < .001), and adult programs (F = 44.477, p <.001). 1.5. The household socioeconomic statuses did not have a significant gap in the level of the Aboriginal adolescents’ preference for the types of programs. In other words, the household socioeconomic status did not affect the level of their preference for their favorite programs. 1.6. The different kinds of household structures did not significantly influence the categories of the students’ preference for their favored television programs. Thus, irrespective of the two-parent family, the single-parent family, the grandparents-breeding family, and the dependent family, the variance of the household structure did not change students’ preferences for their favorite types of programs. 2. The Differences of Idol Worship among Aboriginal Adolescents 2.1. The genders of students were significantly associated with students’ idol worship behaviors, with a correlation coefficient .327. The male students tended to worship the male stars, while the female students favored female idols. In addition, the survey results with regards to the idols the students admired the most indicated that Jeremy Lin (林書豪) accounted for 9.9 percent, Hui-Mei Chang (張惠妹) was 7.7 percent, and Zhi-Xiang Luo (羅志祥) accounted for 6.3 percent. 2.2. The father’s educational levels significantly influenced the state of the idol worship among Aboriginal adolescents (λ2 = 47.408, df = 30, p = .023). The students whose fathers held the diploma of senior high or vocational schools, they worshiped actors, actresses, and singers, sport stars and hosts the most. 2.3. The multiple types of household structures had no significantly affected the types of stars that students worshiped (λ2 = 9.438, df = 15, p = .854). 2.4. There was no significantly association between the length of time the students spent on watching television programs and their idol choices for worship. 2.5. The type of the program Aboriginal adolescents preferred did not significantly influence their idol worship behaviors. Finally, the researcher provides various stakeholders with the following recommendations as further positive considerations in cultivating the healthy television viewing behavior and idol worship: 1. For the household and school education, parents, guardians or family members should set a positive role model for these Aboriginal adolescents, as well as collaborate with school staff to advise these students to establish the adequate television viewing behavior and positive identity of idol worship. 2. Regarding the social education, the classification system for television programs should be forcefully implemented to safeguard students’ sound mental and physical development, and to cultivate their proper TV-viewing attitude as well. Stars can appropriately make good use of their leverage to bring into a positive social education function to these students.
