Composing music in conjunction with words was commonplace among the eighteenth-century musicians, resulting in a substantial number of accumulated song compositions. Romanticism, which emerged in the mid-eighteenth century, encouraged German-Austrian composers thoughout the following century to compose more Lieder (songs) on a literary basis in order to express their personal feelings and to demonstrate individual styles through music. Therefore Lieder became an important feature genre of the western music history of the nineteenth century. This dissertation is focused firstly on the origin of the renowned German folk-song literature, Des Knaben Wunderhorn, including its historical context and features. Secondly, it is to search for the detailed significance of that anthology and how it relates to romanticism. Finally, it aims to identify and analyze the connections between the poems from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, selected by Gustav Mahler, and his own musical interpretation, with a focus on poetic forms, accents, rhythmic features, etc. that demonstrate the inherent “musical” properties contained in the original poems. To be the musical core of this dissertation, Mahler’s twenty-four Des Knaben Wunderhorn Lieder are thus thoroughly discussed to explore the relationship between the form of music and the structure of poetry; in addition, a thorough reflection on how Mahler had finally cast the poetry into some actual musical melodies has been undertaken here. In sum, the process of this research starts from the songs’ lyrical analysis based on accentuation features of the German language, through the literary survey of Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and it finally ends in the interpretation of Lieder. Therefore the aim of this dissertation is to fathom the profound depth of Des Knaben Wunderhorn, in order to assist singers to be the ideal interpreters of songs and poetry, and to improve themselves to become excellent performers of Mahler’s music.
