A lot of colleges have set up hospitality management departments and launched different kinds of hospitality related competitions to enhance students’ learning experienses. The purpose of this study was to discuss the personality trait of hospitality major students in colleges and the influence of participation motivation on learning efficiency. This study targeted at those whose major were in the hospitality related programs in Taiwan. The author adopted questionnaire survey approach and collected 380 questionnaires from March to May in 2013. The descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, factor analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were employed to test the research hypotheses. The results indicated that personality trait of the students has a partial influence on participation motivations and learning efficiency. The participation motivations influence positively on learning efficiency. All of the three participation motivations have a mediator effect between the four personality traits and three learning efficiency. The author hopes that the research results could help academic educators and industry professionals to design effective competition activities to enhance students’ critical thinking and problem solving abilities.
