碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 科技管理學程碩士在職專班 === 101 === Global economic downturn in recent years has already led to the decline of desktop PC contract manufacturing industry in Taiwan. Both external and internal factors put this industry in fierce competition. To address external factors, it is resulted from “The Post PC Era” which means smart phone and tablet/ pad like products is capable of replacing most of the functions of a desktop PC and this even worsen the competition in the field. In terms of internal factors, slow growth on product shipping volume and decreased profit margin with challenges on variety demands of product specification plus the request to shorten development cycle from top tier customers. Major domestic players in electronic contract manufacturing (OEM/ODM) will continuously face the challenges from deteriorating market and strive to survive under such conditions. On the other hand, those contract manufacturing service providers also needs to resolve the issues of both invalid investment on research and development as well as internal resource integration. Thus, creative thinking has to be carried out consecutively in OEM/ODM service providers to understand how to grow their core competencies or find new directions to explore more competitive advantages. This research is based on desktop PC project development in the leading company of global contract manufacturing service providers to understand the history and development path of desktop PC as well as future trends. This research is focusing on “common chassis” design of a desktop PC chassis as the starting point to go into more in-depth exploration, to understand what kind of benefits/ advantages of “common platform” brings to OEM/ ODM service providers and to share the experience of an actual case in the industry to go into more detail analysis on how this will reduce expense on engineering/ development, to see how this generates cost saving opportunities by introducing common platform on new projects in OEM/ ODM industry. This not only reduces the investment required in product development but also achieves the target of meeting product enhancement, shorten development cycle, increase raw material purchasing quantity to cut down the cost and bring more value to customers.
