Engaging in business process improvement enables enterprises to maintain high profits and get more competitive, and also eliminate unnecessary operations, reduce waste and save resources. Process improvement methods varied. Tools such as traditional six thinking hats, KJ method, 6-3-5 brainstorming, trial and error, brainstorming and business process reengineering are very common. The most up-to-date process improvement methods may be Six Sigma method. In recent years, due to the rise of TRIZ methodology, gradually some scholars and practitioners began to use TRIZ methodology including functional analysis procedures (Function Analysis for Process) and processes pruning (Trimming for Process) as the framework for process innovation or process improvement. The above studies focused on the production processes improvement. Very few academics or industry experts explore research on the improvement of processes of a non-technical system. In this study, the TRIZ methodology is used as the framework for administrative processes (non-technical system) improvement. A case of "Student courses selection process in a university " is chosen for process analysis and value analysis. And further use TRIZ contradiction trimming rules and heuristics solution strategy to propose process improvement countermeasures. After the implementation of the proposed improvement actions, the new process will reduce from the original total number of operating days 76.22 days to 44.2 days, and the number of process steps is also significantly reduced. This new improved process is very helpful for the relevant units, staffs, teachers and students. It can improve the quality and performance of the process.
