The design parameter of chain, sprocket and derailleur will affect each others. A smoothly operation can only be achieved by integrating right combination of these parameters. For example, the shape of teeth of sprocket is a key point for up shifting and down shifting operation. A right shape of teeth of sprocket will increase the efficiency on up shifting and down shifting operation. By reducing the contact force between chain and sprocket can accomplish this purpose. The main issue in this thesis is to analyze the difference on up shifting operation for different shape of teeth of sprocket and the dynamic characteristic of chain. The structure strength of sprocket and chain also has been analyzed in this research.   In this study, we use Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) technique to analyze the dynamic behavior between chain and sprockets, and discuss the contact forces during engaging while up shifting. The motion features of the chain also discussed. The shape of tooth of sprocket is varied to understand the effect of engagement between teeth and chain during up shifting. Finally, the structure strength of chain and sprocket were analyzed by finite element software.
