碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 資訊管理研究所 === 101 === The rapid expansion of use of mobile devices, driving rapid growth in demand for applications (Apps) has created trend for many purveyors of software for mobile devices to invest heavily in response to the demand. Although previous research has discussed the motivations for software developers, few studies specifically considered App developers’ motivations. Therefore, this study uses self-determination theory as a framework, and combined with social cognitive theory, to establish a motivational model which contains different levels of psychological needs. By verifying the model, the critical factors of App developers’ engagement in developing Apps for mobile devices can be determined. This study employs a questionnaire distributed to App developers, and then conducts semi-structured interviews to further verify the model. According to SEM analysis results of 216 valid responses, and the transcripts obtained from eight App developers, this study finds that autonomy and relatedness have significant impacts on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. The key factors influencing their behavior are: “pursuit of knowledge,” “sense of accomplishment,” “stimulating experience,” and “rewards and compensation.” The results of this study provide a reference for suppliers of software for mobile devices which can enhance the quality applications’ development to contribute to the commercial success of those suppliers.
