Apple’s revolutionary iPhones have gained popularity in the cellular phone market. Google’s Android devices make inroads into Apple’s market share, which ignites wars on smartphone operation systems. Today, smartphone offers a variety of features such as making and receiving phone calls, Internet access, and multimedia functionality. As a result, users are prone to have smartphone addiction and then ignore surrounding environment. The smartphone “Smartphone Addicts” refers to a group of people who indulge in the world of smartphone no matter where they are. Among smartphone addictive issues, the effects of students’ overuse of smartphone have received significant attention by parents and educators. Online gaming, cell phone addiction, and relevant subjects in junior high school students have been widely studied and discussed in previous research. Given the smartphone with Internet access, smartphone addiction among junior high school students can be anticipated. This study investigates the effects of junior high school students’ personality traits on their use of smartphone applications based on the classification of big five personality traits. In addition, this study classifies smartphone applications, enabling participants to understand the type of application they use. This study result shows that characteristics such asagressableness , or self-oriented characteristics such as neuroticism, does not have obvious effect on smartphone applications preference. Conscientiousness and openness to experience, only have obvious effect on specific smartphone applications. Extraversion will make junior high school student be willing to try different kinds of smartphone applications.
