The author developed a new instrument called Counseling Impasse Inventory in this study for the purpose of quantifying the construct of impasse encountered in the counseling process. Two additional instruments, the Counseling self-Estimate Inventory (COSE) and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire-Short Form (MSQ-SF), were used to measure the constructs of self-efficacy and job satisfaction respectively. A total of 161 practicing psychologists were sampled across Taiwan. The data were analyzed using cluster analysis, ANOVA and canonical correlation analysis statistical procedures. The results indicated that the nature of impasse encountered by psychologists varied significantly in relation to age, experience and work status. The counseling practitioners could be classified via cluster analysis into three attitude types when facing impasse: all-rounder, hopeless assimilator, and conscientious ill-accommodator. The analysis of variance procedure yielded significant differences in counseling self-efficacy and job satisfaction in relation to the attitude toward impasse. Finally, only one form of association between counseling self-efficacy and job satisfaction was found to be significant via canonical correlation analysis.
