Therefore, how to reduce the rotor losses is one of the most debatable issues when referring to reduce the loss or increase the efficiency of AC machines. Copper cage rotor is one of the popular methods to reduce the rotor losses of induction machines, however, the melting temperature of the copper is 1083 Celsius degrees, which is much higher than aluminum’s 660 Celsius degree. Magnetless synchronous rotor is another potential solution to improve the efficiency of induction machines, especially for variable speed applications. In this thesis, a systematic design process is proposed to implement a robust, easy to manufacture and low cost magnetless synchronous motor. According to the experimental results, the robust and low cost magnetless motor is a very competitive alternative in comparison to the permanent magnet synchronous machine and induction machine.
