Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 國文學系 === 101 === Abstract Cheng Ching-Wen is an extremely important writer in Taiwan after World War II. He chooses Taiwan as the background of his writings, and his writing style is deeply affected by western fictions. Cheng’s fictions show the theories of modernism and realism, revealing the common humanity and the inevitability of destiny. He is skilled in psychoanalytic writing so that he is able to depict interior humanity well. Most of his writings are short fictions, but he’s also written some fairy tales in recent years. “The elderly”, frequently mentioned and discussed in Cheng’s short factions, is a significant element of his writing process. Cheng successfully presents the multiple images of the elderly in his books. The elderly portrayed in Cheng’s short fictions illustrate the conflict of family, hometown, and change. In addition, the aging phenomena in his works, including the aging of the body, the psychological change, and the relationship variation, are also classified and summed up in the thesis. The elderly narration in Cheng’s factions is not simply tragic but complicated. Each of his fictions contains intricate humanity. By exploring the content about the elderly narration, four themes that he wants to tell his readers are summarized here: “conflict and solution,” “tragedy and redemption,” “death and transcendence,” and “time and memory.” From probing into the inner world of the elderly, how they face psychological self-conflict and tragedy and how they deal with death and the relationship between time and memory can be found and noticed. Cheng’s words are simple and straightforward, but they thoroughly express the characters’ sincerity and genuineness. The ways that he writes factions are quite unique. For instance, he creates the images of the elderly by using their aging words and trying to reveal what they think in their deep hearts. Besides, he is good at creating the living environment and the background of the characters. The arrangement of the plot and the language deeply impresses the readers of his factions. In Cheng’s creation of factions, he conveys his ideas plainly and realistically. The characters are variously represented, getting rid of the single stereotype for the elderly; the main idea is clearly told, showing his compassion for the elderly. In a word, Cheng’s literary works display his values for life and involve a lot of profound meanings.
