Even a large body of research on a variety of systems of digital games has been extensively developed in the past, the critical characteristics of game preferred by primary school students haven’t identified and clarified for underpinning the design of game-based learning. For this study, we analyzed top-five computer games, which were most popular and frequently used by three hundred and twenty-three students, to highlight critical characteristics of computer games. The findings reveal that boys and girls have different preference for characteristics of computer game. The characteristic of computer games most preferred by boys and girls are high-challenge and high-control respectively, which provide practical implications for designing innovative game-based learning system to promote students’ interest and motivation for learning.
