The impacts of SLR are negative, disastrous, and may affect national security seriously. Such impact needs to be access since the dense populated areas in Taiwan are coastal areas. However, few related research have been done in such subject. The lack of scientific understanding of SLR in Taiwan not only resulted in ignorance, but also led to minimal willingness to take actions. Thus, the objective of this research is to estimate the impact of SLR on Taiwan coastal areas by using scientific reports and literatures. ASTER GDEM was used as the main digital elevation model, and QGIS was the geographical information system (GIS) platform to perform our mapping calculation. In the most likely case in 2100, sea level might rise 1 to 2 meters. Inundation areas are relatively insignificant to the entire country (56.3 km2 or 0.15%, 146.1km2 or 0.4%) to our surprise. However, impacts on economy could be severe when the high production value industries (i.e., petroleum industries) were inundated. The inundation extent would increase with the intensity of SLR. In the 10m SLR case, we found that there would be catastrophic inundations all over the major metropolitans, although it may rarely happen in the end of this century. Taiwanese government should focus on the optimal response to the 1 to 2m SLR case, especially to protect industries that have features similar to petroleum industries. Meanwhile, environmental educators should assist citizens not only equip with knowledge of mitigation such as carbon reduction, but also the contents of resiliencies II in this century, which may assist citizens to cope with some irreversible climate impacts such as SLR efficiently.
