However, the only information of retention time obtained from HPLC fingerprint analysis is insufficient for complex samples. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), on the other hand, can provide comprehensive information including retention time, mass-to-charge ratio and fragmentation which are feasible to the identification and quantification of natural product. In this study, a multi-stage mass spectrometry (MSn) was used to establish the molecular database of natural products in Ampelopsis brevipedunculata (Maxim) Traut var. hancei. Several components which are observed simultaneously from the whole plant will be regarded as “markers” to validate the plant species or even to differentiate the authenticity of the traditional Chinese medicine. According to the previous study, natural products from Ampelopsis brevipedunculata (Maxim) Traut var. hancei have shown some biological activities such as anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-virus and anti-tumor. To explore other health effects of the natural products in this plant, molecular docking-assisted screening was used to find out active compound with anti-hypertensive activity based on its interaction with Angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE). The abundances of the selected natural product from different components, similar species, different cultivated areas or different extraction fractions were determined by LC-MS/MS with MRM mode. This quantitative analysis of active natural product will provide valuable information for drug industry applications.
