Through the exchanges of the complete status of illnesses between nursing staff, not only the patients can receive continuous care, but also the nurses on the next shift can correctly analyze and decide the care interventions to the condition of each patient. However, if the provided information is incorrect, misguiding, or incomplete, it can possibly result in severe complications on patients. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore the effectiveness of shift reporting information system and to analyze further upon the acceptability and satisfaction of nursing staff on the interface and accessibility. The analysis includes the following three main dimensions: interface design, operation functions, and usage outcomes. The research is designed by pre and post-testing a certain group and by sampling one random group of nursing staff in a medical department in one medical center in Taiwan. Through three-shift recording, we are able to compare the completeness of shift reporting and the changes of time between paper shift handover and automated shift handover system. Also, we use questionnaires to study the interface usability and satisfaction of the nursing staff toward this automated shift handover system. After statistical analysis, the conclusion is as following: automated shift handover system indeed increases the completeness of shift handover; however, the averaged shift reporting time and the overall day shift reporting time are both increased. The nursing staff is very satisfied with the interface usability. Moreover, the more usable the interface is, the more satisfied the users are. Automated shift handover system can not only check the latest conditions of the patients but also decrease the mistakes made by handwriting. This makes clinical work more efficient. However, it takes more time to switch screens, resulting in delay of shift handover. Besides, according to open-ended questions, the waiting for response time and the shortage of computers both can affect the willingness of users. If the system can offer feedback and guidance to users, the incentive of the users will be increased. This study result can not only provide the health care insititutions with guidelines to improve the information system implementation but also can be the reference to design automated shift handover systems.
