Many studies have shown a significant relationship between stress and disease, and an appropriate intervention will help for the stress relief. This study aim at exploring the effectiveness of improving stress by auricular acupressure (Gan, Xin,Shenmen) on shift nurses, and use the quasi-experimental design. The sample was composed from the oncology nurses of medical center in the northern of Taiwan and random distributed into two groups as the experimental group and the control group each with 32 shift nurses. The experimental group was intervened by auricular acupressure 8 weeks, and the control group without any intervention. Perceived stress scale and heart rate variability were applied for stress evaluation, and all participants measured at starting (pre-test) and end of 8 weeks (post-test). This study use SPSS 18.0 to analyze statistic data which the percentage, mean and standard deviation used within descriptive statistics analysis, and the chi-square test, t test, and ANCOVA used within inferential statistics. The results of study show.1) The analysis of demographic data of the two groups, including: age, education level, working years, working rank, religion, number of children, shift situation, etc., are no significant difference between two groups (p>0.05) present there are objective comparability. 2) Comparing with pre-test and post-test, VLE drop from 828.45(940) to 568.42(461); LF Norm drop from 53.12(17.35) to 44.33(18.78); HF Norm rise from 46.87(17.35) to 55.66(18.78); LF/HF drop from 1.56(1.32) to 1.08(0.99); and PSS drop from 41.13(5.62) to 34.38(6.65) after intervened by auricular acupressure 8 weeks. These results present VLF and LF Norm decrease, HF Norm rises, and LF/HF and PSS decrease. The LF Norm, HF Norm, and SPP have reach significant difference (p=0.027, p=0.027, p<0.001). But even LF/HF and VLF have decreased still no enough to reach statistically significant difference (p=0.201, p=0.076). 3) Compared the difference of their pre-test and post-test measurement between the experimental and control group : The VLF difference between the two groups (experimental group minus control group) is 200.07; The LF Norm difference between the two groups (experimental group minus control group) is 10.86; The HF Norm difference between the two groups (experimental group minus control group) is -10.86; The LF / HF difference between the two groups (experimental group minus control group) is 0.45; The PSS difference between the two groups (experimental group minus control group) is6.35. The difference of LF Norm, HF Norm, and PSS compared between two groups are reached a statistically significant difference (p = 0.013, p = 0.013, p <0.001). As for the LF / HF and VLF, even although the differences between the two groups have decreased, but the results were not statistically significant difference (p = 0.122, p = 0.093) 4) Without intervened by auricular acupressure, there are no significant difference between VLF, LF Norm, HF Norm, LF/HF, and PSS within control group. After using auricular acupressure 8 weeks, the activity of autonomic nervous system has improved, perceptive stress also has decreased which mitigated the stress of participants. This study shows the auricular acupressure certainly improves the stress of shift nurses, and it can be reference as a practical evidence-based of improving the stress in the future.
