The aims of this study were to translate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Taiwanese version of the scales of parents’ expectations, experiences and reactions to routine ultrasound examination (PEER-U) in Taiwanese pregnant women. There are two phases in research methods. In phase one, the PEER-U was translated into Chinese using the technique of translation and back-translation and was reviewed by an expert panel for cultural equivalence. In phase two, psychometric testing of the PEER-U was conducted by using a convenience sample of 263 pregnant women recruited from an antenatal clinic of a medical center in north of Taiwan. Three instruments including the PEER-U, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) and Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC) were administered to the participants. The PEER-U demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.89 and 0.86 for first part and second part). In validity testing, the confirmatory factor analysis and item analysis demonstrated that the Taiwanese version of the PEER-U, not having met the standard overall goodness-of-fit. Items less than 0.40 factor loading and having the most mismatched indices were eliminated; the overall goodness-of-fit was markedly improved to meet the standard. The first part and second part of PEER-U has significant correlations with STAI-S (r =.46, p = < .001; r = .50, p = <.001), SOC demonstrated significant negative correlation (r = -.14, p = <.028; r = -.37, p = < .001) with two parts of the PEER-U. Therefore, the PEER-U demonstrated good criterion-related validity. By eliminating questions with suboptimal factor loading in the confirmatory factor analysis, the validity of the scale can be strengthened and more applicable to the Taiwanese population.
