in academic study and practice. There are many studies about relationship quality, but few
about relationship motive. Thus we can''t make sure that all relationships contribute to the
performance. This study explores the relationship between the chiefs and the directors, figures
out there are what types of the chiefs'' motives to keep good relationship with the directors, and
how the directors face and manage the chiefs with different motives.
This study adopts in-depth interview method and interviews 8 directors and 8 chiefs in
total. After analyzing the interview contents, then classify the results. This study finds that the
chiefs’ motives of keeping relationship with their directors have positive and negative part.
The positive motives include the following: 1. To go well at work. 2. To have a good
atmosphere at work. 3. To communicate smoothly. 4. To be accepted by the directors. 5. To
follow the directors with same belief. On the other hand, the negative motives include the
following: 1. To relieve the work. 2. To get the position that he wants. 3. To get personal
benefits by the position. 4. To get personal conveniences. 5. To join the group of power.
Secondly, in the aspect of how the directors face and manage, this study points out that
the directors should tell the various motives of the chiefs and basically have an equal rule
while managing affairs. To the chiefs with positive motive, the directors should give them
timely encouragement to keep their positive motives; to the chiefs with negative motive, the
directors should draw boundary clearly and say no to them firmly.
