| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 台灣文化研究所碩士班 === 101 === As a belief of orientation god, Xuan Tian God is Located in the North with supreme status and vivid images. The belief originates from the worship of nature, such as star god, animal god and water god. With the passage of time, it transforms into a personal god and transcends the four spiritual creatures. As a result of warfare, the Han people migrated along with the belief of Xuan Tian God from the North to the South, then to Taiwan and finally settled down in Tainan.
The gist of this research is to explore the belief of Xuan Tian God in Tainan over a time span from the period of Koxinga to the days before the merger of Tainan city and county. It introduces the current locations and histories of the total 14 temples, which mainly worship Xian Tian God and spread over the Districts of the East, the South, the Middle-west and the North of Tainan, so as to understand the development of the belief of Xuan Tian God in individual District in Tainan. It also investigates the cultural characters of the belief of Xuan Tian God in Tainan, such as the legends and the functions, introduces the associated deities, and outlines the subordinates of Xuan Tian God. It hopes that the people in the future can realize the belief of Xuan Tian God and the background and implications of how the belief migrated to and settled down in Tainan.
Therefore this research studies the belief of Xuan Tian God in Tainan. Following the preliminary understanding of the evolution from Xuan Wu to Xuan Tian God, it explores the developmental context of this belief from the time it first migrated to Tainan till the days before the merger of Tainan city and county.
