News about missing physically or mentally disabled elders is frequent and there is a growing need for mobile assistive devices. This paper describes the design of an integrated walker system with GPS and GSM. There is an emergency button on the wheeled walker that will cause the co-ordinates to be sent to family members and an alarm will be sounded. This increases the chances of the person being found quickly. The wheeled walker can also be controlled by a button and this not only reduces the physical burden on the hands and arms but increases the assistive function. Our paper also tests and evaluates an environmentally friendly way of providing light for the walker at night. A solar panel on the walker can be used during the day to power a proton exchange membrane electrolyser fuel cell (PEMFC). The hydrogen and oxygen generated are stored for later use at night. Three PEMFC in series can give an output of 2.51 volts that can be used to power LEDS when it is dark. The maximum power from the fuel cells is reached within 2 minutes and the LEDs can be run for 30 minutes. We believe that our investigation will lead to the provision of a smart assistive device platform and provide a guiding reference for further application and commercialization.
