Many ancient folk songs sang the praises of women. Narrative poems in the pre-Qin period and the Han Dynasty are mainly seen in “Shi jing,” the Book of Songs and Yuefu poems. By comparing Weifeng, a chapter of Shijing, with Kong Que Dong Nan Fei, Southeast the Peacock Flies, we can feel that independent women were gradually shackled by the feudal ethical code with its establishment. Besides, it also reveals ancient women’s marriage crisis from different perspectives. What they have in common is that they both stem from folk songs and that they’re both featured with realism. They differ in the breadth of contents, the influence of historical backgrounds, the vividness of characters, and the integrity of narratives. This paper consists of 7 chapters. Chapter I, Introduction, introduces the research motivation and the analysis of the previous research results. Chapter II introduces generally about narrative poems of the pre-Qin period and the Han Dynasty, including definitions of epic, gest and narrative poem, and defines features of narrative poems of the pre-Qin period and the Han Dynasty. Chapter III discusses the backgrounds of Meng and Kong Que Dong Nan Fei, such as the historical background of Shi jing, marriage and folk customs of Wei, the formation of Yuefu Poems, and analyzes the influence of historical background on Kong Que Dong Nan Fei. Chapter IV compares the content breadth of Meng with that of Kong Que Dong Nan Fei in terms of the main ideas, plots, structures and characters. Chapter V compares their integrity of narrative by analyzing the depiction of plots, characters and environment and the narratives. Chapter VI compares their image presentations, writing skills, and artistic expressions of conflicts. Chapter VII makes a conclusion based on the research topic and researches of the first five chapters and affirms the historical role of Meng and Kong Que Dong Nan Fei and their influence on later narrative poems.
