This thesis is a study of the compositional techniques in the musical compositions of the author as well as of previous research and methods of practice of the compositions of other contemporary musicians. Three different elements of musical organization—notation, indeterminacy in music, and transformation in music—together comprise the topic of the thesis. The author has already applied and put into practice these three elements in his own musical compositions, and now also interprets, discusses, and analyzes in this thesis. The thesis comprises four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, and includes the author’s motivation and research objectives, as well as an explanation of terms, and definition of the scope of research and theoretical approach. The second chapter is a literature review. It primarily aims to explain the indeterminacy in the work of contemporary composers, and how imagery, structure of notation, and electronic media are used in music. This chapter will take as examples for analysis the techniques of application of indeterminacy and electronic media in the work of contemporary composers. It then dissects the characteristics of the music of composers since the 1960s, and discusses the directions composers may take in the future. The third chapter is a case study analysis of one of the author’s compositions. The first, Yearning at the 38th Parallel, combines a string quartet and real-time processing. The analysis covers the musical and compositional techniques contained within the piece, the use of Csgrain signal processing software, and the use of musical indeterminacy as a compositional technique. The fourth chapter is the conclusion, and will identify the defining stylistic and technical characteristics of the author’s work. It also explores how the author transforms external experience into inspiration, and strives to return to that fundamental spirit of contemporary music— “a simple concept.” Hsu, Ya-Ming 許雅民 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 75 zh-TW
