This paper studies his career and music works during 1946-2008. Yi-Fong Hong published his first work (lyrics and music composition) in 1946. Yi-Feng Hong soon became a household name with his songbooks and radio broadcasting. In the 60s, the album “Songs of Yi-Feng Hong” with music by Hong himself and lyrics by Jun-lin Ye was released; it was an instant hit in the Taiwanese song market. The album also helped Hong to become as an actor. In the period of 63 years(1946-2008), Yi-Feng Hong released at least 360 songs. The first chapter introduces Hong’s works and his biography. My research method includes data collecting and interviewing Hong, his relatives, colleagues, and record company. I divide Hong’s life into five periods. Data resources include hand-written files, music composition, record, films, separated and categorized the whole collection. Chapter 2 analyzes Hong’s musical melody, divided according to different periods(1946-1959, 1960-1972, 1973-2008.)30 representative works were chosen. Chapter 3 analyzes Hong’s lyrics, separated by periods (1946-1959, 1960-1972, 1973-2008.)17 representative works were chosen. Chapter 4 includes a discussion on Hong’s art of singing, including a categorization of Hong’s singing works, and an analysis of “King of bass singer” singing style, by so doing we could understand the reason of his popularity. Hong’s voice touched the soul of the Taiwanese people at the time. His work embodied the spirit of period, the essence of humanity, becoming the classics of history of Taiwanese songs. This article is written with the hope of witnessing and preserving his works, also with the belief that local folk music culture will continue to flourish.
