This system includes three parts: The first part utilizes background image subtraction to find out the static scene change, and then separate the vehicle out. The second part utilizes shade and road characteristic in-formation to find out the vehicle shade and distinguish the road, ant then utilize the algorithm to make the image more intact. The third part utilizes edge information to find out the image edge, and use the outline trace technology to calculate that the area of road, then find out the quantity of vehicle on the road and calculate the area of vehicle. After getting these data, the traffic is jammed or not can be judged by calculating the proportion on the road of vehicle. As the vehicle reaches the saturation in the highway, the system will send out an alert to remind drivers raising vigilance or utilizing the substituted road ahead of time.
