Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣科技大學 === 資訊工程系 === 101 === Many application programs can help people learn English, and their main function is to provide English-learning materials and tests. The main contents of applications are vocabulary and grammar. Although the programs can assist users in learning English and help them remember items learned, the programs need to be improved in three aspects: (1) making the learning process enjoyable, (2) monitoring the student’s learning state, and (3) effectively managing and presenting study materials. Embedding the three aspects in an English-learning application has its advantage. The resulting program can thus attract people to use it for a long time, and make the learning process more effective. In order to address these needs, we have developed an English-learning application with the following features. 1. It allows us to play movies, which are stored in the computer or downloaded from YouTube, to make using this software enjoyable. 2. It is designed in accordance with people’s forgetting curve, and can find the parts that need to be reviewed, which helps the user in retaining those parts in the memory. 3. This software can focus on the part you have not mastered so that you do not have to review all the words every time. 4. It is easy to find the parts unfamiliar to you owing to the flexible sorting capability; for example, words can be ordered based on latest wrong answers or the longest untested words. Currently, four present orders are available. 5. When the answer to a question is wrong, an explanation can be shown. Moreover, one can put some notes and add learning thoughts and mnemonics to the explanation. 6. One can set the program to hide either the English words or corresponding Chinese, unlike when one reads a book and needs to use something to cover the answers or some of the words. The hiding function can be used for testing without given choices. 7. One can choose to connect to an online, third-party dictionary.
